The climate change indicators associated with some of the sensitive ecosystems identified in the Pyrenees are analyzed below. Specifically, indicators are defined for monitoring glaciers and ice caves, although information is also available on high mountain lakes and peat bogs.
To monitor the glaciers of the Pyrenees, the indicator is the surface covered by the glacier, and its evolution in recent decades is analyzed.
On the other hand, the impact of climate change on the ice cave A294 in Cotiella (Aragon) is based on several indicators: the volume of ice in the cave, the temperature in different areas of the ice cave and two indices obtained from these temperatures measured in the cave: the freezing index (FI) and the melting index (TI).
Other indicators are being developed based on data recorded in recent years in high mountain lakes, which will soon be introduced in this web portal.
